The collection contains loan folders which usually have correspondence, application forms and other papers of closing farm loans negotiated through the Shepard Abstract Company. Other correspondence relates to the Jefferson Highway Association (1925-1928) and to the effort to get paved highways in Iowa and the Midwest.

Hugh H. Shepard (1876-1970) was a lawyer and businessman of Mason City, Iowa. A graduate of the University of Iowa and the University of Iowa Law School, he became an attorney and president of the Shepard Abstract Company.
